NUANS In a Nutshell
What Is NUANS?
NUANS stands for Newly Updated Automated
Name Search. Basically, NUANS is a sophisticated
search engine that searches over 8,000,000 records of corporation
names, trademarks and business names. Industry Canada, a department
of the federal government, runs the program itself, while
HP Canada has the contract to manage the "business" end. HP
Canada in turn contracts with the "Official Search Houses"
who provide the actual service. However, recently the federal
government has begun to offer official NUANS Reports for federal
incorporations directly to the public.
What Does the NUANS Search Do?
- Name Searching: The exact
characters that you specify will be searched, as well as common
variants. Built-in subroutines within the NUANS program determine
these variants.
- Ranking: The results are
prioritized, listing first those records that are most likely
to qualify as "confusing." This determination is once again made
by the NUANS software.
- Database Searching : NUANS
has access to the Federal Incorporation Database, the Trademarks
Registry, and most, but not all, provincial incorporation and/or
business databases. The exact databases searched depends on the
type of NUANS search you order, which in turn depends on your
purpose in ordering the search.

NUANS Searches for Other
Provinces
Incorporations and business name registrations are the responsibility
of the provinces as well as of the federal government. While most
provinces require a NUANS search, the requirements vary by province.
Hence, we recommend that you link directly with your own provincial
government's Internet site. Strategis, Industry Canada's website,
maintains links
to Provincial & Territorial Registrars.
